| L'absinthe... Sweet wormwood, an aromatic herb, is scientifically proven to target and kill breast cancer cells. In a recent study, the herb had the ability to stop breast cancer by killing precancerous cells, before those cells could develop into a tumor. Using artemisinin, a derivative of the sweet wormwood plant, University of Washington bioengineers conducted a study using rats given a cancer-causing agent known to induce multiple breast tumors. Half of the rats were fed regular food, while the other half were fed food with 0.02 percent artemisinin added. For 40 weeks, researchers monitored each group for the formation of breast tumors. Among the rats that didn’t get artemisinin, 96 percent developed tumors. In comparison, 57 percent of the artemisinin-fed rats developed tumors. Tumors that did develop in the artemisinin-fed rats were both fewer and smaller in size. Artemisinin is selectively toxic to cancer cells and shows promise in cancer prevention. Sweet wormwood, a native plant of eastern Europe, and cultivated throughout North America, has sweet aromatic leaves. Grown primarily as an ornamental, it has been used since ancient times as a medicinal plant for its strong antifungal and antibacterial properties and in the treatment of malaria. | |
