I could have had a V-8! I remember that commercial from my formative years of television watching. At the time I thought the ad obnoxious and the drink to be gross, but new research is suggesting that drinking that V-8, or just plain tomato juice, could be beneficial for smokers and men with prostate cancer. In a recent Japanese study, mice were exposed to cigarette smoke to induce emphysema. Half of the mice were given water mixed with 50% tomato juice and the others were given plain water. The mice with the tomato juice mixture did not get the disease because tomato juice contains the powerful natural antioxidant lycopene. Antioxidants, such as lycopene, prevent chemical damage caused by dangerous groups of atoms called free radicals. Kuniaki Seyama, one of the scientists from the Juntendo University School of Medicine in Tokyo, said: ''Using our mouse model for smoke-induced emphysema, we wanted to intervene in the accumulation process by changing daily lifestyle, especially eating habits. We thought lycopene might be a good candidate
