Kirin Well-Foods Company of Japan has voluntarily agreed to take products containing agaricus mushrooms off the market after tests suggest a possible link to cancer risks and liver damage from the mushroom. Currently, the agaricus mushroom is widely sold as a health food product with claims for increasing a resistance to cancer. Japan's Health, Labor and Welfare Ministry announced a recent test on rats conducted by the National Institute of Health Sciences suggested Well-Foods agaricus mushroom granules products may promote cancer in rats
